🌟 Meet Our Costume Designer: Tiffany Beckwith-Skinner 🌟

We’re thrilled to introduce the incredible Tiffany Beckwith-Skinner, the creative mind behind the costume design for DeepBlue’s performance at Expo 2025 Osaka.

Tiffany’s vision beautifully merges movement, music, and meaning. Here‘s how she describes her approach:

“The design for DeepBlue’s Expo 2025 costumes is an iteration on the movement between musical composition and notation—how the physical form required for instrumentation intersects with the body’s motion. The fabrics create a material line that continues the visual story between sound and gesture.”
Drawing inspiration from the Expo theme centred on the sun goddess Amaterasu-ōmikami, Tiffany chose fabrics that balance density and flexibility, mirroring the grace and strength of performance. The dark tones of the costumes serve as a respectful silhouette under Amaterasu’s majestic light, allowing the music and movement to shine.

🎭✨ Tiffany’s work embodies the harmony of tradition, innovation, and performance, and we can’t wait for you to see it in action.

As our Expo 2025 tour comes to a close and we head

As our Expo 2025 tour comes to a close and we head back to Australia, we’d like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to a few special people and groups:

Firstly, to our amazing costume designer, Tiffany Beckwith-Skinner. She has dedicated countless hours to crafting these beautiful designs that looked incredible on stage.

Props to Andrew Gibbs our visuals artist whose work you’ve been admiring in our posts.

To Vicky Chen, our Assistant Stage Manager and digital storyteller, one of our @QUT interns. It’s been a blessing to have her on this trip capturing our performances, helping plan each day’s schedule, documenting amazing stills and videos and helping us backstage with our stilters and costumes! We’re so grateful to have also had QUT intern Jolina Wilbur back in Oz working tirelessly to curate an amazing social media campaign.

To the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and in particular Barbara Poliness – thank you for giving us the opportunity to perform at the Australia Pavilion. We’re honoured to have been able to share the magic of Australian music and culture with so many Japanese and international fans.

To our stage managers Aki Caddy and Tomoko Yamashita and tech gurus Chris Gadsby and Matt Milne – thank you for your tireless work in making our performances seamless and ensuring everything ran smoothly.

To everyone who has donated to our ACF campaign – thank you for helping keep the arts alive, supporting our intern Vicky Chen, and our cross cultural collaboration between Julia Hill (shakuhachi), Zinia Chan (composer) and Nakamura Sensei. This campaign is still open until the 25th of July if you’d like to donate.

To our friends and family, who continue to give us love and support throughout this epic project, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without you!

Last but not least, to all our supporters – thank you for always showing up and cheering us on! We’re incredibly grateful for the wonderful support at our first three shows – your enthusiasm has truly blown us away! 🎶

Tonight, at both our 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM shows, we’ll be joined on stage by students from the Canadian Academy in Kobe.

Tomorrow, at our 5:00 PM show, students from the Nara University of Education Junior High School will join us as well. Be sure to give both groups a warm cheer! 👏

We’ll be at the Australia Pavilion until June 10th, so if you’re at Expo, come and see us – and don’t be shy to say hi after the show! 👋

You may have ‘met’ Julia already if you’ve seen any of our ACF campaign posts! Currently she’s based in Japan as a post-graduate research scholar, tuning into our rehearsals via video conferencing. With the blessing and cultural guidance from her teacher, Nakamura Sensei, we are honoured to feature her on both shakuhachi and violin.

What’s your practice routine?
"I split my practice into three 1-hour blocks daily. The core 45 minutes includes repeating three 5-minute tasks three times, with warm-up and cool-down time on either end." 🕕

Do you have any pre-concert rituals?
"Good sleep and solid meals in the days before—mental and physical health are key for musicians!" 🛌

What’s the most challenging thing about being in DeepBlue?
"Learning choreography online. Facing the screen flips everything, so I have to reverse moves in my head. I can’t wait to rehearse in person!" 📺

“I usually practice at night after dinner, when everything’s a bit quieter.”

“I always have a snack before going on stage.” 🥟

What’s the most challenging thing about being in DeepBlue?
“Playing with expression and confidence while staying in sync with complex choreography.” 👯

“Stretches + scales = daily essentials"

Do you have any pre-concert rituals?
"Always stretching, and I like to do some meditation during makeup" 💄

What’s the most challenging part about being in DeepBlue?
"Trying to reign in the passion! I get so excited and want to do so many things, but I always remind myself that it’s about the team." 🫂

Japan and Australia are both countries which prioritise school music education. So as part of our upcoming tour we’re bringing our YoungBlue program to two schools in the Kansai region. 🎻

On 2 June we’ll visit Nara University of Education Affiliated Junior High School and on 3 June we’ll spend the day at Canadian Academy in Kobe. 🏫

We’ll work with YoungBlues from these schools to show them dynamic, innovative approaches to music and performance. Then, these students will join us on stage at three of our shows at the Australia Pavilion for Expo 2025 Osaka! 💃 @australiaatexpo

Check out these amazing visuals from our first work-in-progress session presented at @iseainternational in collaboration with @abstracthumanradio . This session used the’ Human Theremin’ AI-driven technology to create live visuals tracking our bodies and sound effects which were manipulated through the movement of our violinist, Deanna.
