Zinia Chan

Zin_PianoZinia started playing the piano at age 7 and alto saxophone at age 9.
Being a stubborn child she soon realised she didn’t like traditional discipline and stopped piano lessons. It wasn’t until she was 15, did she realise she had a deep love of learning piano music by ear and went back to study with the same teacher, who even though was retired then, accepted her. Since then she has spent every day on the piano.
She loved the piano so much, she skipped to AMEB Grade 8 within two years and completed her AMEB Grade 5 theory in that time. After her first year of learning, she won her first award in the piano solo category at the Gold Coast Eisteddfods and a year later was accepted into her Bachelor of Music. She believes she couldn’t have accomplish her musical goals without the trust and support from her piano teacher, who although often presented her with more unrealistic goals than her own, taught her the meaning of ambition.

She loves performing with DeepBlue because it’s a group that’s all about community, accepting new talent and innovative ways of exploring music. As a bonus, she gets to share the stage with wonderful and creative musicians, while participating in both traditional and modern forms of music.
Thanks to music, she has performed as a session multi-instrumentalist for international and national artists at her favourite festivals and venues, including Brisbane Powerhouse, Judith Wright Centre, QPAC, Woodford Folk Festival, Brisbane Festival, and for a while inside the State Library of Queensland on a beautiful grand piano. Music also gave her the opportunity to work in Australian Radio, and with wonderful and generous theatre and film talents.
In her spare time, you can find her working and wandering around art festivals, cooking and eating, composing music and daydreaming.
